The mayor of Los Alamitos, CA, Dean Grose sent around an email of the following picture with a caption that read: No Easter Egg Hunt This Year. Not surprisingly, Mayor Grose has caught a lot of flack over this brouhaha and will resign his Mayordom sometime soon.
Wait. Why? Because it's funny. In response to all these crazy calls of him being a dumbshit bigot, Mayor Grose had this to say: "Bottom line is, we laugh at things." Right. Like racism, for example. Don't you get it? Here's a quick math equation to help some of you numbskulls out there who don't understand comedy: watermelons + White House + black president + racist pricks knowing how to attach a picture in an email = really, really funny! Love your equation. I'm going to use it next time one of my Comp I students says, in our class discussion on what constitutes offensive speech, "I don't want to sound like a racist, but that cartoon is funny."

I'm all for that move. If we live in a federalist society and the SCOTUS clings to states-rights claims whenever it doesn't want to make a tough decision, the states should be able legislate medical marijuana.
Don't you think that a lot of Obama's moves have been sort of reactionary, though? I mean, I'm a big government liberal and everything (I mean that), but even to my eyes this is all moving a little fast. I'd be a little more comfortable if there were academic studies, or something rational, provided to back up some of these moves.
Show us your a policy wonk, Obama, not just a knee-jerk liberal. Show us that this isn't about liberalism, it's about good policy.

the real tragedy here is that it's a pretty shitty black guy/watermelon joke. i'm mean, seriously.
i don't see how sending a racially charged joke automatically puts you at the 'racist' table come thanksgiving....it's a joke born of a stereotype, and its one thing to find some semblance of humor in it, a whole other to start hitting up clan meetings on craigslist. calling a dude a 'racist' is some bold shit.
is there some other info that substantiates this dude as anything more than a fat old white guy with a predictable sense of humor???
